About This Concern
Scarring / Post-Acne Marks: what happens
Would you notice these?
Signs of Scarring / Post-Acne Marks
Indented or 'pitted' scars on cheeks, jawline, or forehead (ice-pick, boxcar, or rolling scars)
post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark flat spots) that persist more than 8–12 weeks after a blemish
textured skin where the surface feels uneven when traced with fingertips
shadows cast by deeper scars that make them look worse in side light.

What to Expect
Your Scarring / Post-Acne Marks journey
Scar Typing Assessment
Your clinician distinguishes between pigmented flat marks (responsive to chemical peels and superficial microneedling) and textural depressions (requiring deeper microneedling or fractional RF microneedling for collagen restructuring).
Scar Treatment Plan
A multi-modal plan is designed. Deep boxcar or ice-pick scars typically need 4–6 fractional RF microneedling sessions. Flat pigmentation often requires only 2–3 chemical peels. Combinations deliver the best overall outcome.
Treatment Sessions
Sessions are spaced 3–5 weeks apart to allow full collagen response between visits. Energy or peel strength may be increased with each cycle based on progress.
Progress Review
Photographs are taken at intervals so improvements in scar depth, texture smoothness, and evenness can be tracked objectively.
Microneedling suits most scar types but must be matched carefully to scar depth. Very shallow rolling scars are among the most responsive types. Ice-pick scars may require a combination of treatments over several months. Peeling after acne — rather than active breakouts during treatment — is generally preferred for optimal results.
Aftercare & Safety Note
Before and after your Scarring / Post-Acne Marks
Aftercare Instructions
- Use SPF 30+ daily — sun exposure darkens post-acne marks during the renewal phase.
- A gentle moisturiser with ceramides supports barrier recovery after needling.
- Avoid direct sun and heat exposure (sauna, hot yoga) for at least 72 hours post-treatment.
- Sleep on clean pillowcases to reduce the risk of re-inflammation during healing.
Safety Notes
- If you are prone to keloid scarring, a patch-test session on a small area will be performed first.
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can occur after deeper peels on darker skin types — starting weak and progressing gradually reduces this risk.
FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Acne scars can improve years after formation because microneedling and RF stimulate new collagen regardless of scar age. Older scars may require more sessions — but improvement is typically achievable.
Press lightly against a mark — if it turns white and the colour returns when released, it's a flat blood vessel mark. If the skin surface itself looks indented or raised even when pressed, it's textural. Your clinician will map both types in consultation.
